milieu1 is the first ambient album by BAZR (aka Jan-Bas Bollen). The symphonic atmosphere betrays his background as a composer of mainly contemporary concert music. The 5 pieces are inspired by the changed urban soundscape of his native Amsterdam during the Covid-19 lockdown from March until June 2020 and are part of a project in which Bollen cycles through town leaving behind a trail of subtle sounds from a mobile loudspeaker setup.
Although there are nods to ambient pioneers like Eno, Iasos and Basinsky, milieu1 offers an expressive environment that is not contained by Eno’s definition of ambient as music "as much ignorable as it is interesting". While it is intended to be played quietly in the background, there are deeper layers that keep emerging. Conversations between people may be gently interrupted by the captivating sounds, only to be allowed to continue after a moment of attention to milieu1’s detailed structures.
To produce this sonic world, BAZR wrote his own generative software that in principle could run and keep rendering new versions indefinitely. He also performs finite "milieus" live on his HyperTheremin instrument.
